Chandigarh : Punjab Congress MLAs on Thursday gheraoed the Chandigarh residence of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and staged a dharna against the “loot” of farmers in grain markets and the delay in payment to them by the SAD-BJP government.

Rahul had on Tuesday held the ruling coalition “responsible for the miseries of the farmers”. He had also advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “focus more on improving the condition of the farmers rather than the hollow talk about his ‘Make in India’ campaign”.

PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa has given a separate call for a statewide ‘Rail Roko’ programme between 12 noon and 1 pm on May 2.

Bajwa yesterday said the “Rail Roko” would be the PPCC’s first phase of “Jan Andolan” against the “anti-people” policies of the Badal government.

“The government must explain why it took 28 days to announce release of part payment of Rs 4,000 crore to the farmers. It appears the move came under pressure after Rahul’s visit as the RBI had cleared Rs 16,460 crore cash and credit limit for wheat procurement on April 1. Nobody knows why the SAD-BJP regime delayed the payment,” he said.

Jakhar said the Congress would resort to a chain of protests to ensure payment to the farmers.
