JALANDHAR: Reacting sharply to the statement issued by Bathinda MP and union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal about Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the grain markets in Punjab, state Congress spokesperson Nimisha Mehta on Thursday said the visit was a slap on the face of the entire Badal clan, as they failed to visit farmers in mandis.

“Despite being in power and representing the state in the Union cabinet, neither Harsimrat nor her husband Sukhbir Badal ever visited the Punjab mandis to hear farmers’ grievances,” the state Congress spokesperson maintained.

“Now, when Rahul came to share farmers’ grief, Harsimrat is making a political issue out of it. It is shameful that Harsimrat has adopted such cheap gimmicks to garner attention and cover her follies,” Mehta further said.

Attacking the Badal bahu over questioning Gandhi about his absence when rain and hailstorm hit crops, Nimisha said Harsimrat must explain which all places did she care to visit during and after the rain and hailstorm despite being in the country.

“Just to save his wife’s cabinet berth, Sukhbir Badal did not present a strong case of seeking compensation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They should have sought the compensation in March as it had rained heavily during that month also,” Mehta alleged.

Offering a free ride to Punjab mandis to the Badal couple, Mehta said both Sukhbir and Harsimrat are fond of travelling in choppers.
