CHANDIGARH: Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday asked chief minister Parkash Singh Badal as why most of the crimes committed against women in Punjab in the recent past had a connection with the Badal-led Akali Dal in one way or the other.

“This is bound to happen when the rulers are driven more by vested interests than public good,” he observed in a statement here.

Citing three incidents — the tragic death of a teenage girl travelling in the Orbit bus in Moga, abduction of a minor girl from Faridkot by Akali councillor Dimpy Khaira and the killing of an assistant sub-inspector of police in Amritsar while he tried to save his daughter’s modesty -- Amarinder pointed out that all these had a Badal or an Akali connection.

The former chief minister pointed out that the bus in which the girl was molested in Moga belonged to the Orbit Transport Company of the Badals. “Had the bus been owned by someone else, the police would have arrested the owner by now,” he said. “Given the immunity accorded to the Akalis by the government, they break the law with impunity leaving the lawenforcement agencies helpless,” he remarked.
