SANGRUR: Former Sangrur Member of Parliament (MP) Vijay Inder Singla, along with his supporters protested at the local railway station against the ruling SAD-BJP government which, he alleged, had failed to protect the rights of farmers, labourers and business community in the state. The protesters also raised slogans against the state government for failing to provide justice to the family of the minor girl thrown out of an Orbit bus on April 29. The protesters stopped the DelhiLudhiana Shatabdi train for over an hour.
“Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal should resign on moral grounds for claiming to have no knowledge of the ownership of the bus company, when she had given a signed affidavit claiming that her husband, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had shares in the company,” Singla said.
He also demanded the loan waiver for farmers and grant of a bonus of `200 per quintal along with compensation for damage to the crops.
“First, there was shortage of urea and then rains and hailstorm troubled farmers. Farmers are committing suicides not only because of crop failure but also due to debt burden. As many as nine farmers had committed suicides in the Sangrur district alone in the recent past,” he claimed.
Later in the day, Singla and some other Congress leaders were taken into preventive custody. Singla was accompanied by state president of the Mahila Congress and local units of the youth Congress. Singla also visited the families of Sukdev Singh of Chatha Nanherra village and Satwinder Singh of Khanal Kalan village, as these farmers had committed suicides.
