CHANDIGARH: Speaking with one voice for a change, Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday rejected the Justice VK Bali (retd) Commission set up by the Parkash Singh Badal government to probe the Moga incident.
On Tuesday, Badal had announced a commission of inquiry under Justice Bali. “The Badal family, anticipating strictures against them from the high court, has with an ulterior motive tried to deflect public anger by constituting an inquiry committee,” Bajwa said in a statement here.
Bajwa reiterated that deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other owners of Orbit Aviation were guilty of gross criminal negligence, but the Punjab government, instead of charging the Badals and others under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was trying to “gloss over the fundamental issues of accountability and culpability of the owners of the bus”.
Bajwa also stated that since a fresh high court bench was likely to take up this matter, and given the sensitivity of the issue concerning women’s security and “the gross criminal negligence of the Badal family”, it would serve the ends of justice if a comprehensive judicial inquiry was conducted by a sitting judge of the high court to examine all facets of this unfortunate incident.
Amarinder, in a separate statement, said: “Since the matter is pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court, there was no point in setting up a parallel probe,” adding that the chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should have faith in the high court. “Parkash Singh Badal is trying to divert the public attention in his characteristic style,” he observed.
