Chandigarh: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has welcomed the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order on the sugarcane arrears amounting to Rs 730 crore, which the government owed to the farmers of the state. “It is shameful that the government had been sitting on the matter regarding payment of arrears of sugarcane to farmers despite claiming to be pro-farmer government,” she said in a statement here on Wednesday.

She said that the livelihood of farmers was linked to their agriculture produce. She said that amount to be paid to farmers had been pending for the past four months. She also flayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre over the black money bill passed by the Lok Sabha, saying it was aimed at “covering up the inefficiency of BJP-led NDA government to bring black money from abroad.”
