Ludhiana : Ludhiana Member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu in Lok Sabha on Wednesday drew the attention of the House towards the contribution of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha in the nation’s freedom struggle.
Bittu said that while fighting for country’s independence, Kartar Singh Sarabha attained martyrdom at the young age of 19 years. His supreme sacrifice lit the fire of revolution and inspired Shaheed Bhagat Singh as well as hundreds others in Punjab to fight and lay down their lives to free our motherland from foreign rule, he said.
Throwing light on the life of the martyr, Bittu said that Kartar Singh Sarabha was born in 1896 in village Sarabha which falls in his Ludhiana Lok Sabha constituency.
He said that Kartar Singh Sarabha left his studies mid-way and started the publication of revolutionary newspaper of the Gadar Party and through his poems and articles inspired the people to rise for the country’s freedom. The dream to free the motherland from the clutches of foreign rule brought Kartar Singh Sarabha back to India. Alongwith his comrades, he started meeting the army personnel in the cantonments and exhorted them to take up arms against the foreign rule.
Bittu said that the worried British government then arrested Kartar Singh Sarabha alongwith his friends and initiated cases against them. On September 13, 1915, the court handed out its verdict of death penalty.
On November 16, 1915 he was hanged in Lahore Jail, he said.
Referring to the rare bravery of Kartar Singh Sarabha, Bittu urged the Union government to commemorate his forthcoming 100th martyrdom day in a befitting manner by releasing a postal stamp, a coin, a bravery award in his name and organise suitable programmes to inspire today’s youth.
