Amritsar : With an aim to sensitise people against alleged corruption, rampant drug addiction, lawlessness and misgovernance under the SAD-BJP rule, the Aam Aadmi Party today embarked on a statewide ‘Jan Chetna March’ from Jallianwala Bagh here.
The march was led by party’s Punjab observer Sanjay Singh, Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, and AAP MP Bhagwant Mann. Sanjay Singh said, “Raising the slogan ‘Beiman Bhajao, Punjab Bachao’, the workers will pass through every district of the state before culminating the rally at Anandpur Sahib on May 23. It is against the rising drug addiction, hooliganism, police excesses and corruption in the state.”
He said once the top state of the country, Punjab had slipped into a “quagmire of misgovernance and corruption under the Akali Dal-BJP rule”.
He said the people of the state must unite if they wish to bring Punjab back on the track of good governance and progress. He hit out at the Badal government over the Moga bus incident and accused it of “pulling out all stops to find a middle ground”. He said women were not safe in the state and that they would fight to put an end to the misrule of the SAD-BJP. Earlier, all the leaders paid rich tributes to the martyrs at historic Jallianwala Bagh before starting the march.
Led by top party leaders in an open vehicle, the rally passed through the city where the party workers accorded a warm welcome to it. Later, the AAP held a road show at Batala which was followed by public rallies in Dhariwal and Gurdaspur, which evoked a good response.
Members said the march would reach Pathankot at night after passing through Batala, Dhariwal and Gurdaspur. Addressing these gatherings, the party leaders said the turnout at their rallies reflected that people were fed up with the SAD-BJP alliance government and that they wanted a change.
Meanwhile, differences between Chhotepur and AAP leader Dr Daljit Singh came to the fore as the latter visited the Jallianwala Bagh separately.
He was not seen with other party leaders at the time the march started. The two leaders didn’t even meet. Dr Daljit Singh said it was the party’s programme and they put in their best efforts to make it successful.
Case pending against Chhotepur: Opponents
Jalandhar: State convener, AAP, Sucha Singh Chhotepur’s opponents claimed that he had a criminal case pending against him. They alleged that Chhotepur presented a false affidavit when he filed his nomination papers for Gurdaspur parliamentary seat. Complainant Kulwinder Singh produced documents showing that an FIR was lodged against Chhotepur on July 3, 2013, at Dhariwal police station. His son Ajay Chhotepur clarified, “The case was lodged at the time of panchayat elections. When my father filed his nomination papers for parliamentary polls, the police deleted his name from the FIR. But later, the court added his name again to the FIR and he was issued summons.” — Deepkamal Kaur
Chhotepur redeems himself, ropes in bigwigs
Batala: Punjab AAP convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur politically redeemed himself by roping in senior leaders Sanjay Singh and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Maan to his Amritsar-Pathankot road show. Chhotepur was allegedly removed from his post by the state executive a few days ago. Dr Daljit Singh, head of the Disciplinary Committee, had passed a resolution, seeking his removal. However, before any decision could be taken, Sanjay Singh stepped in to support him.
