CHANDIGARH: The Congress has alleged that human resource and development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani was intent on saffronising’ the education system of the country. At a press conference in the city on Sunday, spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi alleged that recent actions by the minister smacked of interference in autonomous institutions.

She claimed that the appointment of RSS mouthpiece Panhjanya’s former editor Baldev Sharma as the chairman of the National Book Trust was part of the strategy.
“The directions to the directors of the IITs for a separate canteen for vegetarian students on directions from the RSS also defy logic,” she claimed.
She added that the recent ‘forced resignation’ of National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) chairman Parvin Sinclair and the exit of nuclear scientist Anil Kakodkar from IIT Bombay were signs that the minister wanted to saffronise education.
