CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged snooping by the Shiromani Akali DalBharatiya Janata Party (SADBJP) government against its political adversaries and members of the media and other sections of society.
In a letter to the chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court with a copy to the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Bajwa said an impartial probe should be ordered. He said it was alarming that the state government was going purchasing more sophisticated snooping technology. The intended purchase of such sophisticated technology was indiscriminate eavesdropping of opposition leaders, judges and members of the media for the purposes of intimidation, browbeating, muzzling and arm-twisting by the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in the state, he said.
Bajwa pointed out that the state government had a dubious track record with regard to the use of such surveillance technology, which is routinely used to settle political scores and to promote the commercial interests of the ruling family.
