CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Congress has warned the state government against disconnecting the power supply to the waterworks and RO (reverse osmosis) water purification systems in many villages over non-payment of electricity bills.
In a statement issued here on Monday, Congress legislators Lal Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukh Sarkaria, and Parminder Pinky threatened an agitation if the supply was not restored. Free power to the farm sector costs the state government `5,000 crore a year, while the bills over which the power supply has been disconnected add up to only a few hundred crore rupees, the statement adds.
The leaders said it was a plan to force people to buy costly bottled water. “The Congress constituencies are worst-affected,” it reads.
