Chandigarh : The Punjab Congress has demanded a CBI probe into the alleged “snooping” by the SAD-BJP Punjab government against its political adversaries, members of the media and other sections of society. The SAD has termed the allegations “baseless and politically motivated”.
Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa has also sought the intervention of the court. He has written a letter to the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court with a copy to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. “Only a comprehensive and impartial investigation would unravel the manner and the extent to which Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Badal had converted Punjab into a police state by violating the Constitution and the law with impunity,” Bajwa alleged.
He said the government was about to purchase more sophisticated snooping and surveillance equipment. “The intended purchase of such sophisticated surveillance technology will be used to eavesdrop on the conversations of opposition leaders, judges and members of the media. The ruling alliance will now intimidate and muzzle the opposition in the state,” alleged Bajwa. He called upon the Chief Justice to take suo motu cognisance of this critical issue by treating the letter as a public interest litigation.
Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema said: “The Congress stands exposed for taking up irrelevant issues. Why does the Congress fear if it has not done anything wrong? Bajwa should remember that senior Congress leaders and his opponents within the Congress had levelled very serious allegations against him in a letter to the Congress high command. The SAD-BJP government is not spying on any person or terrorising anyone.”
