Gurdaspur : Pradesh Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa’s wife and Qadian MLA Charanjit Kaur Bajwa today cast her vote in favour of the BJP apparently in an attempt to keep the SAD out of power in the Dhariwal Municipal Committee (MC) elections.

Her endeavour to get the BJP man elected as the MC president turned out to be an exercise in futility as both parties were tied at seven votes each following which the draw of lots system was adopted. The SAD won in the draw of lots.

In the 13-member House, the SAD has six councillors and got the support of one Independent to clinch a clear majority. However, the BJP tied up with the Congress, with both parties having three councillors each. The SAD thus had one councillor more than the Congress-BJP combine.

When the voting took place today, the six-member SAD, backed by the Independent councillor, bagged seven votes. The Congress-BJP combine had six votes, but the vote of Charanjit Kaur, who is the ex-officio member of the MC by virtue of being the Qadian MLA, it too got seven votes.

When the votes were tied, the result was decided by draw of lots. Subsequently, things went in favour of the SAD which elected Sukhwant Singh Kang as its president. The Independent councillor, Surjit Kaur, was elected the vice-president. The BJP had projected Jyoti Mahajan as its presidential candidate and Charanjit Kaur’s vote technically meant for the BJP candidate.
