Kapurthla : Hundreds of Congress workers led by senior party leader and local MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh on Monday staged a massive protest dharna against the alleged ‘police-politician-drug mafia’ nexus in Kapurthala in the backdrop of the arrest of an ex-Akali Block Samiti member, Dharvinder Singh Mintu with two and a half kgs heroin. The dharna was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
“Dharwinder was the close aide of the Market Committee chairman Kapurthala Ranjit Singh Khojewal and both are incited by the district planning committee chairman Sarabjit Singh Makkar due to which they are fearlessly indulged in drug smuggling business,” Rana alleged.
Addressing the dharna, Rana demanded a thorough probe by a Special Investigation Team to ensure that the culprits do not get scot-free and also the police and the politicians patronising the drug smugglers got identified and exposed.
He also appealed to the Narcotics Control Bureau of India to hold a separate investigation as Mintu’s arrest by the Jalandhar rural police recently had indicated towards a bigger nexus.
The MLA said that the leaders like Makkar and Khojewal were misusing the name of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and the Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and claiming proximity with them. This, he said, was done to pressurize the local police so that they do not dare take any action against them.
He said that just due to their local congress party leader Daljeet Singh Badyal had tries to highlight the links of a drug accused smuggler Mintu with the local Akali leaders by uploading photographs on social websites, police have tried to intimidate him.
Alleging that some police officials were hand in glove with the drug mafia, the Congress leader claimed that one Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohinder Singh was so corrupt and infamous for patronising the drug smugglers that he is known as ‘Mohinder Singh Fifty Fifty’.
Appealing the Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal, who is also the Home Minister to order an independent probe, Rana said, nobody should be spared irrespective of which party he belongs to. “It is the question of saving our generation”, he remarked.
Among others present on the occasion included, Surinderpal singh khalsa, gurdeep singh bishanpur, kulwant bhandari, manoj bhasin, harnek singh harry, dawinderpal singh ranga, jasbir singh randhawa, Hari SIngh Khojewal, kulwant kaur, balvir singh bira,Pawan aggarwal, satnam singh walia, dara ram, narinder singh mansu, tarsem lal, sarwan singh bhatti, anoop kalhan, rajbir bawa, bittu chaudhary, deep singh, kulwant singh sohi, Amit bery, vikas sharma, vishal soni, and others.
