KAPURTHALA: Hundreds of Congress workers led by Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh gathered outside the old district courts on Monday and held a protest against flourishing drug business in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Rana Gurjeet referred to the recent arrest of Akali worker and former block samiti member Dharwinder Singh, alias Mintu, from whose possession 2.35-kg heroin was recovered, alleging involvement of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders from Kapurthala.

“Dharwinder is a close aide of Kapurthala market committee chairman Ranjit Singh Khojewal. Both enjoy patronage of district planning committee chairman Sarabjit Singh Makkar due to which they are fearlessly carrying drug business,” Rana Gurjeet alleged.

He demanded that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) should also interrogate Khojewal to check his sources of income.

“Khojewal wears expensive clothes and gives tips not less than `1,000 to a gunman of ministers or senior superintendent of police (SSP). Where is all this money coming from?” he asked.

Rana Gurjeet said after local Congress leader Daljeet Singh Badyal tried to highlight the link between a drug smuggling accused, Mintu, and local Akali leaders by uploading photographs on social websites, the police had tried to intimidate him (Badyal).
