Kapurthala : Levelling allegations against local Akali leaders and policemen of supporting the drug mafia, Congress workers, led by MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh, today held a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.
The Kapurthala legislator demanded the setting up of a Special Investigative Team to ensure a thorough probe in the arrest of former Akali block samiti member Parminder Singh Minta with 2.5 kg heroin. He was arrested by the Jalandhar police on May 18.
Rana Gurjeet alleged that if probed well, the case could expose the well-knit ‘police-politician-drug mafia’ nexus.
He also appealed to the Narcotics Control Bureau of India and Enforcement Directorate officials to hold a separate investigation in the case to expose the links with political bigwigs.
“Minta was the protégé of local Akali leaders. It was because of their patronage that the the Kapurthala police never dared to touch him even though they knew about his activities,” he said.
