Jalandhar : The Indian Youth Congress has begun an exercise to hold elections to the state body by the end of this month. But the list of candidates released by the party has led to infighting among Youth Cong leaders.
The leaders and their mentors have questioned the list of “performers” eligible for contesting the election for the post of president. Several district-level leaders have called the new norm anti-democratic.
Kaku Ahluwalia, Jalandhar unit president, alleged, "The idea of coming out with performers' list is against democracy. Some strong youth candidates had been suspended recently just because they were not in good terms with the PYC president. By including suspension criterion, such candidates would lose the right to even contest while the way for others would automatically be cleared. This system has to be rectified."
Kamaljit Brar, PYC general secretary and son of former Bagha Purana MLA Darshan Singh Brar, is pinning hopes on June 15 meeting. "I had staked claim for president's post this time, but my name has not been included in the list. The reason is my suspension over a petty argument with party men. I will meet IYC leaders and seek remedy."
Punjab Youth Congress chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary and Indian Youth Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said senior party leaders and workers had expressed their resentment over the list.
Chaudhary said: "I would visit Delhi in a few days to recommend the addition of more names to the list."
Warring said: "This is not the final list. All those youth leaders who think that they have claim to the top post can meet the IYC team on June 15. A final list of performers will be released after giving due consideration to their claims."
He endorsed the decision of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to release a performers' list instead of following the earlier pattern of allowing all office-bearers to contest the poll.
