Chandigarh : Expressing shock over suicide by Fatehgarh Sahib farmer Surjit Singh, the Punjab Congress today took on the SAD-BJP combine, alleging that the government failed to protect the interests of the state farmers.
The PPCC announced a compensation of Rs21 lakh for the deceased’s family.
Congress’ Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh expressed grief over the incident while PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa called upon the Narendra Modi-led Union Government to provide succour to the distressed farmers rather than focussing on “anti-farmer” policies.
“The situation calls for an agriculture emergency in the state,” Amarinder warned in a statement.
Amarinder alleged almost every day suicides were being committed by distressed farmers, but it failed to move either the state or Union Government. "It is a tragic state of affairs for the farming community as a whole where death seems to be the only way out,” said Amarinder.
Bajwa, who attended the cremation of Surjit Singh, took on Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for "having failed the farming community".
