Chandigarh: A day after a sexagenarian farmer Surjit Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib district, who had also briefed about his grievances to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during his visit to the state last month, allegedly committed suicide, the Congress Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Sunil Jakhar on Thursday flayed the state government. “Farmers had been committing suicide in Punjab and Chief Minister only had been writing letters to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of providing relief to the farmers,” he alleged, while expressing anguish over the way the state government had been dealing with issues of farmers.
In a statement issued, here, Jakhar warned the state government to launch protest against the non-functioning of irrigation canals in the state, due to which, he alleged the farmers had been facing problems in the irrigation process during the peak summers.
