CHANDIGARH: The Opposition Congress on Thursday demanded the convening of an emergency session of the Punjab assembly to discuss farmer suicides, a day after a debt-ridden farmer ended his life in Fatehgarh Sahib district. “We urge chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to convene an emergency session of the assembly,” Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira said here.
Khaira said the assembly should also be convened to introduce the regulation of the rural credit system, reduce interest rates of state-owned banks and set up district-wise debt determination and settlement boards.
