FEROZEPUR: Congress MLA from Abohar and leader of Opposition in the state assembly Sunil Kumar Jakhar said here on Thursday that Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was merely writing letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of providing relief to the debt-ridden farmers of the state.
Jakhar said this in a press release issued a day after a farmer Surjit Singh of Fatehgarh district, who had briefed Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi on the plight of farmers in the state during his visit in April, committed suicide.
Jakhar lambasted the state government saying that farmers have been committing suicide in Punjab, but the SAD-BJP government was not doing anything except being a mute spectator.
He expressed anguish over the way the state government has been dealing with the issues of farmers.
Jakhar warned the state government of launching an agitation against the non-functional irrigation canals in the state, due to which farmers have been facing huge problems in irrigating their land during the peak summer.
“The state government had promised the farmers in the state free electricity and water for irrigation, but it has failed to do so,” Jakhar said.
He said due to untimely rain in September, February, March and April, farmers had suffered losses worth around `2,000 crore.
