Patiala : Senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has expressed shock and dismay over suicide by another farmer Harmeet Singh of Mansuran village, near Ludhiana.

The former chief minister, who was on her way to Sunam in connection with a private function on Friday, said it was a matter of great concern that debt-ridden farmers were resorting to committing suicides day in day out due to anti-farmer policies of the State government.

She also blamed the NDA government at the Centre for a spate of suicides by farmers all over the country. Bhattal pointed out to the meager increase of just Rs 50 in the minimum support of paddy affected by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. All such steps had rendered farm sector totally un-remunerative.

Bhattal also praised Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president, for having visited the house of Surjeet Singh in Dadu Majra village of Fatehgarh Sahib, on Thursday. Surjeet Singh had committed suicide under the burden of debt a few days ago. The Congress has always been sympathetic to the plight of farmers, she said. Bhattal had also met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday.
