CHANDIGARH: Slamming chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for his “abdication of responsibility to curb road accidents” that had “turned state highways into killer roads”, People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal on Thursday said the CM’s stand was not only shocking but also reflected “inhuman attitude of the rulers” towards the precious lives of people.

“The CM should quit in case he is unable to perform,” the PPP chief, a former Akali Dal leader and finance minister, said in a press statement while referring to the CM’s statement who had attributed the rise in road mishaps to the manifold increase in traffic.

“Perhaps no chief minister ever has so brazenly and publicly abandoned the responsibility that has been entrusted to him by people,” he added.

Saying that the CM had no right to remain in office even for a minute, he said, “Are these people in government only to fill their own coffers?”

He said if an exclusive road could be constructed for connecting the Pallanpur resort of the Badals with the main road, why the same efficiency could not be shown in case of other roads.

He alleged that roads were being constructed in non-priority areas where the properties of the ruling family were located.

Manpreet said the increasing number of vehicles on the roads was the sign of prosperity and it was for the government to take steps accordingly. It was the job of the government to anticipate what the situation was likely to be after 20 or 30 years and plan the network accordingly.

“By expressing helplessness, the CM has only manifested his failure to govern, once again,” Manpreet added.

He reminded the CM that the speed of traffic on the Ambala-Delhi stretch of the GT Road in Haryana was well regulated with speed limit being strictly observed but that was not the case with the highways in Punjab.

He referred to a report appearing earlier this week about the police having put up a naka and speed radar on a highway. The bus travelling at a speed of 97 km that came on the radar was that of the Badal family.
