SANGRUR: Terming chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s remarks that Punjab was being deliberately being dubbed a drug hub as mere drumbeating, Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said the chief minister is only trying to evade the real issue and hid his government’s failure to deliver on promises to the people.
The chief minister is simply skirting around the issue by saying that Punjab falls on the transit route of drugs coming from across the border which are supplied in the entire country as the government has failed to check drug trafficking with an iron hand, she said.
Latest figures from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) state that there is no drop in drug abuse and trafficking in Punjab as the state had registered 50% of the total drug-related cases in the country. According to NCB, 30,000 cases of drug peddling were registered in the country out of which 15,000 were from Punjab.
She alleged that the present regime in Punjab lacks will and vision to tackle the problem of drug addiction in the state. She said youth of the state need adequate opportunities and congenial atmosphere to find work and employment to sustain them, adding that it is absolutely important to channelise the energy of youth in positive direction as they are the future.
BJP, the alliance partner of Akalis, also seems to be more interested in resorting to shedding crocodile tears on drugs to gain political mileage but not willing to come forward and ask its alliance partner, SAD, to wake up from slumber to combat the drug menace in Punjab, she said.
People of Punjab have lost the faith in Badal government as it has miserably failed to deliver on all fronts.
Law and order has completely collapsed in the state and the common man in the state is worried about his security and well-being, she said.
