Cong workers stage dharna at Nakodar against SAD-BJP govt’s ‘biased policies’

NAKODAR: More than 1,000 activists of the Congress staged a dharna at the office of the subdivisional office (SDM) here on Wednesday against the alleged biased policies of the Punjab government.

They raised slogans against the government and the administration for three hours in scorching heat. Party leaders said that SAD leaders are openly indulging in drug smuggling and illegal mining of sand while false cases are being registered against Congress workers.
They demanded immediate release of old age and widow pension and the issue of ration on blue cards. They also demanded the withdrawal of the increase of 5% in electricity bills and 1% cess on registration of sale deed.
Former MLA Amarjit Singh Samra said Congress sarpanches are being denied grants for development works in their villages. He said that NRI residents of Mirpur Marri village have been denied permission by the block development and panchayat officer (BDPO) to lay the sewerage system and demanded immediate intervention of the higher authorities concerned so that the work can be started.
He demanded a vigilance probe into the embezzlement of crores of rupees by Nakodar nagar council in the name of development and inquiry into the lying of underground cables by telecom companies without deposing road-cutting charges in the town.
Samra said the safai employees, working for more than eight years, should be regularised and demanded vacation of the nagar council properties encroached upon by councillors.
He also demanded that tax on lifting garbage from houses and shops should be abolished. He also demanded equal distribution of grants to all villages sanctioned by the 13th finance commission.
