PATIALA: Congress leader and former deputy speaker of Vidhan Sabha, Bir Devinder Singh, has criticised the statement of Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh where he had listed “failed love affairs, impotency and dowry” as some of the causes for suicides by farmers.
“The statement of Union minister is not only derogatory in spirit, it also lacks substance. It is an attempt to abuse the entire farming community of India. If the Union agriculture minister analyses the agrarian crisis in such a stupid manner than God help the farmers of the country,” he said.
He said the cause of farmers’ suicide was linked with the hapless economic conditions they were confronted with. “This imposes severe psychic gloominess which impairs his thought process, attitude and cerebration. Seeing no hope for survival, he is ultimately driven to commit suicide,” said Bir Devinder.
