Chandigarh : Former Chief Minister and Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday hailed the Punjab Police operation in Dinanagar on Monday, killing all the three militants. He questioned the logic behind the suggestions that Army should have been involved in the operation.
“I am surprised over so much fuss in certain quarters for not involving the Army in the operation when Punjab Police were perfectly competent to do the job which they did so well with great confidence and courage and sacrificed precious lives in the process,” the former Chief Minister said in a statement issued here.
He said the way Punjab Police personnel, commandos and SWAT carried out the operation, had not only boosted the morale of the police across the state, but also reaffirmed people’s faith and confidence in their capacity and competence. “I am surprised over the wisdom of those people who wanted to involve army to flush out just three terrorists,” he remarked.
Capt Amarinder pointed out that there were five commando battalions in Punjab Police, besides the specially trained SWAT personnel. “If Army has to be involved in all such operations then what are the commandos and SWAT meant for?,” he asked, while asserting that Punjab Police had finished militancy in the past and it has proved it once again that it continues to have vigour and the morale to face any challenge successfully.
On Monday, seven persons - four civilians and three policemen, were killed by heavily-armed militants who stormed the Dinanagar police station in Gurdaspur district.
