GURDASPUR: Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa has said the families of the martyrs killed in the militant attack on Dinanagar police station must be given `50 lakh each in compensation.
Bajwa, accompanied by AllIndia Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Shakeel Ahmad and secretary Asha Kumari, had joined the cremation of superintendent of police (detective) Baljit Singh in Kapurthala on Wednesday. The SP was killed in cross-firing between the police and the militants on July 27.
The leaders also visited Dinanagar to meet the families of those killed and injured in the attack.
“If the kin of victims of recent bus accidents — in Moga and Rupnagar — can be compensated with upwards of `20 lakh, why is the state government giving only `10 lakh to families of national martyrs,” he said, adding that the son of the slain SP must be given the job of a DSP on compassionate grounds and the daughters must also be given gazetted jobs.
“The injured must be given `1 lakh compensation. The bus driver and the railway employee, who saved many lives must also be honoured,” he added.
He also called for the state government to modernise the police and free them from VIP duty,.
“The seriousness of Sukhbir, who is also the home minister, can be gauged from the fact that Punjab is boiling and he is busy holidaying in Poland,” Bajwa claimed.
