AMRITSAR: The simmering differences between Youth Akali Dal (Majha) chief Inderbir Singh Bolaria and his party Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) came to the fore on Thursday with Bolaria staging a protest against the state government demanding the shifting of the Bhagtanwala garbage dump.

SAD chief parliamentary secretary Inderbir Singh Bolaria (centre) addressing residents during a protest against the state government’s proposal to set up a solid-waste treatment plant at Bhagtanwala dump in Amritsar on Thursday.

When deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal visited the dump site recently, Bolaria — who represents the Amritsar south constituency where the dump is situated — had given the visit a miss. During his visit, Sukhbir had announced that the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Treatment Plant would be set up in Bhagtanwala.

However, Bhagtanwala residents on Thursday staged a protest with local MLA Bolaria joining them.

Two-time MLA Bolaria told reporters, “The government and I, as an MLA, have failed the people.” When asked if he would he resign, Bolaria said, “I am not one of those who will run away,” adding that he had no differences with any leader. “I am against the policies of the government as far as garbage dump in my constituency is concerned,” he added.

AKALIS DEMAND BOLARIA’S OUSTER
Meanwhile, Akali leaders who thronged the protest venue raised slogans against Bolaria and demanded his ouster from the party. Terming Bolaria’s move a “political stunt aimed at garnering publicity”, Amritsar (urban) SAD unit chief Upkar Singh Sandhu said Bolaria “wanted to gain the lost ground in his constituency”.
