Phagwara : The Congress, under the leadership of PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa, has decided to hold a series of dharnas against sugar mill owners to protest their unfair, unilateral and anti-farmer decision. The first dharna will be held at Phagwara on August 25 and thereafter against all other private sugar mills.
Addressing a press conference here today, PPCC senior leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira accused Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of maintaining a stoic silence over gross exploitation of aggrieved farmers.
“It is saddening to note that the BKU is also maintaining a studied silence over this burning issue,” he alleged.
Khaira said private sugar mill owners have issued public notices announcing closure of their units, for the 2015-16 cane crushing season. The reason cited by these private millers is imbalance between the high MSP of Rs 295 per quintal price of sugarcane and the cost of production of sugar.
