Mukerian : Punjab Pradesh Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa today announced that he would sit on an indefinite fast from November 16 in Chandigarh in case sugar mills don’t start the crushing of sugarcane by November 15.

“I will either get the mills started or return dead. The crushing season usually starts between November 10 and 20. If the millers do not fall in line by November 15, I will sit on fast from the very next day,” the PPCC chief told a huge gathering of farmers, braving heat and humidity at his rally outside a private sugar mill on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway here this afternoon.

Bajwa, along with party leaders, workers and farmers, blocked the highway as a symbolic protest for about five minutes. Bajwa also came in support of the farmers who have long been awaiting the clearing of their dues by the millers.

“I will hold a dharna here again on October 16 if the CEO of this sugar mill, Deepak Yadav, does not pay up their entire dues to the cane farmers. We do not intend to hold any rally outside Dasuya mill as it is the only sugar mill which has cleared all payments to farmers,” he said, announcing that the next dharna would be staged by in front of the Kiri Afghana sugar mill on September 12.
