CHANDIGARH: Referring to a series of recent incidents of rape in Punjab, Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira said here on Sunday that the repeated horrific cases leading even to murder show that the fear and respect of law have deserted the state.

He blamed these brazen crimes on politicisation of the police force. “The function of the police has been reduced from maintaining law and order to aiding political vendetta. From Bihar, where gangrape, abduction, kidnapping and murder were once order of the day, the tag of lawless state has moved to Punjab,” said Khaira, questioning “the silence of (Union minister) Harsimrat Kaur Badal (who belongs to Punjab’s ruling family) over these gangrapes and murders”.

“The Badal family (Punjab’s ruling clan) has turned a brave Punjab Police, which can take on even terrorists, into its private militia and made even Akali jathedars their political masters. The wrongful and immoral appointment of convicted leader Bibi Jagir Kaur as Istri Akali Dal president has sent a wrong signal to women. How can girls be safe in Punjab where people who killed own daughter are glorified?” said Khaira. In 2012, Bibi Jagir Kaur was convicted of illegal confinement and forceful abortion in the murder case of her daughter, Harpreet Kaur.
