Chandigarh : The Punjab Congress has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ‘ditching’ Punjab by not announcing the much-needed financial package to bail out the state from a ‘precarious fiscal situation’ and for the revival of its economy.
PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa and former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today dubbed Modi’s visit as a “fruit-less affair”.
They advised people of the state to not look forward to the SAD-BJP government for any sort of relief in the coming days.
“The people in this border state should stop expecting anything from the Narendra Modi government as the Prime Minister has even refused to take notice of the pleas made by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal from the stage for providing relief to farmers.
“Even the new international terminal of Chandigarh airport that Modi inaugurated today was actually sanctioned by the UPA government, which had constituted a special purpose vehicle for its construction,” they said.
The top Congress leaders said that as Modi had come to the capital of Punjab and Haryana, the people of Punjab were expecting that he might announce some package or give them some relief but he has “once again ditched the people”.
“Modi had announced a liberal financial package for Bihar in view of the Assembly elections, but has betrayed the farmers of Punjab who have provided much-needed food security to the country,” he said.
He called upon Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to come out with a white paper on assistance that the state government had received during the UPA government and under the Modi regime and stop misleading the people that the Congress had always meted out step-motherly treatment to Punjab.
