Maur : Aam Aadmi Party leaders today focused on burning issues such as farmer suicides and crop loss due to natural calamities and spurious insecticides at a rally held under the party’s “Punjab joro” campaign.

They alleged the recent damage to the cotton crop was a result of supply of duplicate seed and insecticides to the growers by the state government.

The rally held at the grain market witnesses a huge gathering. AAP leaders, including MLA from Delhi Jarnail Singh, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann, Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Baljinder Kaur and others, also spoke on rampant drug abuse in the state, besides corruption and poor state of agriculture and education sectors.

Bhagwant Mann said: “We have seen ‘att’ (crossing of all limits) and now we will see the ‘antt’ (the end) of Akali Dal. The huge crowd here indicates that the people of Punjab want change. They are fed up of the corrupt successive governments.”

On Deputy CM Sukbhir Badal’s statement claiming that people go to AAP rallies for entertainment, Mann said he had won the Lok Sabha election with a huge margin. The Akali leaders had given similar statements at that time too. He said only time would prove their strength.

Chhotepur claimed the Punjab government was responsible for rising farmer suicides as it failed to compensate those who faced damage to their crops. He added: “If AAP is given a chance to form the government in 2017, it will give compensation of Rs1 crore to every martyr who dies for the nation.”
