Chandigarh : The Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of central funds meant for scholarships by the state government.

The Congress Legislature Party will bring a privilege motion against the Minister for Welfare of SCs and BCs Gulzar Singh Ranike.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar accused the government of withholding the funds released by the Centre and diverting it and making contradictory statements on the issue in the Assembly.

Jakhar said Ranike, in a reply to his query in the last session of the Vidhan Sabha, had stated that Rs280 crore had been released for post-matric scholarship for SCs and no amount was pending. Showing some documents, Jakhar claimed that against the laid down rules of the Union Ministry of Social Justice, the amount was used to clear all pending claims of scholarship for six financial years, beginning 2007-08. “Ranike misled the House and thus we are bringing a privilege motion against him on September 24,” he said.

The post-matric scholarship for minorities, released on August 30, 2013, was disbursed only on August 28, 2014. The rules clearly state that the amount released in a year is to be utilised the same year.
