Chandigarh: Dissatisfied with the reply of Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon during the Question Hour, the opposition Congress on Wednesday staged a walkout over the issue of providing subsidy to the poor families on sugar and kerosene oil in the state. Having sought to know whether the Centre was providing sugar and kerosene oil at subsidised rates to the poor people of the state, Jakhar said that while around 4.86 lakh poor families were being deprived of subsidised sugar, another lakh of poor people were not getting subsidised kerosene in the state. Later unsatisfied with the reply by Kairon, the Congress MLAs led by Jakhar went into the Well of the House and raised anti-government slogans before staging a noisy walkout from the assembly.

Repeatedly seeking the formation of a House Committee to probe the matter, Jakhar said that the entire subsidy was being allegedly embezzled while poor were perishing. However, his demand for a House Committee formation was declined by the Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal. Before the walkout by the Congress MLAs, Kairon pleaded that the government was willing to explain everything on the issue, but in vain.
