LUDHIANA: Simarjit Singh Bains, Independent state legislator from the Atam Nagar constituency, has lashed out at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over farmer suicides in the state. He said instead of doing anything for the farmers, the government has been nurturing big corporate houses.
Bains alleged that in 2005, the state government had given 300 acres of land to a corporate house for developing it, crop diversification and giving training to farmers. The contract was for four years only. It was also mentioned in the contract that the company cannot erect concrete structures on the land.
The company, however, violated the norms and also grabbed 100 acres of land adjoining the 300-acre land, and built a school and another structure on it, said the member of legislative assembly (MLA). “The company has also axed trees that were there on the land and sold the wood for `4 crore,” he said.
Bains said he had raised the issue in the assembly, but Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal kept mum. Bains said that he would write a letter to the agriculture minister and Prime Minister besides approaching the high court. Slamming the Congress as well, Bains said the party’s MLAs were playing a “friendly match” with Akalis.
