CHHAPAR (LUDHIANA): Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar took charge at the party’s Chhapar Mela rally here on Monday in the absence of state party president Partap Singh Bajwa and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh..

Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and Khanna MLA Gurkirat Singh Kotli were among the other leaders present. Bajwa had not been invited to the rally, which was organised by former MLA Jassi Khangura, while Amarinder is currently abroad.

Addressing the rally, Jakhar said Amarinder was the only face of the Congress in Punjab and a majority of the leaders and workers had extended support to him (Captain) for dethroning the corrupt SAD-BJP alliance.

Referring to Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal’s recent ‘closed-door’ meeting with his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar in Chandigarh, Jakhar said it was an open secret that this discussion was about the river waters issue, which was already a closed chapter.

Hinting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention, Jakhar said letting anyone reopen this issue had laid bare the Badals’ weakness.
