New Delhi : Punjab Congress vice-president Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi today said that former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh would soon be given the responsibility to lead the party’s charge for the next Assembly elections in the state.
Three-time MLA from the state, Sodhi said he was saying that on the basis of his interaction with senior party leaders in the Capital. He, however, evaded a direct reply on the matter when probed further on the issue.
“The announcement would be made sooner than later. Amarinder is the best bet for the party for its campaign for the next Assembly elections in the state,” Sodhi said.
Considered close to Amarinder, Sodhi said people of the state were disillusioned with the SAD-BJP government, and the Congress was being seen as an alternative to it. “Drug mafia has flourished under the patronage of Akali leaders. There is rampant corruption. Anti-social elements are having a free run,” he said.
Law and order has deteriorated alarmingly in border districts, especially Firozepur, Amritsar, Pathankot and Gurdaspur.
He demanded resignation of Punjab Agriculture Minister Tota Singh for government’s alleged failure to take preventive measures against whitefly attack on crop. There were early warning signs, but those were ignored, he said.
Akali Dal’s ally BJP could not escape accountability as regards omissions and commissions of the government, he said.
