TARN TARAN: Congress MLA from Khadoor Sahib Ramanjit Singh Sikki (48) has quit the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in protest against the recent incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.

He sent copies of his resignation letter to the assembly speaker and the governor on Sunday. In the letter, Sikki said, “Keeping in view the recent incidents of sacrilege and the current scenario, I find myself helpless in correcting the situation. One such incident occurred in Baath village in my constituency, which has further hurt me deeply.”

He added: “Under the given circumstances, I don’t wish to be part of this ‘jhoothi sarkar’ (a government that lies) and the Vidhan Sabha. Hence, being a true and devoted Sikh, I quit my Vidhan Sabha seat. Kindly accept my resignation.”

Sikki, a baptised Sikh, had defeated old Akali warhorse and former minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura in the 2012 assembly polls.

He was the lone Congress candidate to emerge victorious from the four assembly seats of Tarn Taran district. Sikki, who hails from Jalandhar district, is considered close to Amritsar MP Captain Amarinder Singh . Backing Sikki’s decision, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar told HT, “It shows the anguish of every Sikh and every Punjabi of the happenings in Punjab (cases of sacrilege).”

Meanwhile, Amarinder and Congress MLAs will visit Golden Temple on Monday to pray for peace.
