CHANDIGARH: A Punjab Congress delegation met governor Kaptan Singh Solanki on Tuesday to demand President’s rule in the state, saying the violence and protests over the desecration incidents had left the government “paralysed”.
Led by state Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Sunil Jakhar, the legislators submitted in their memorandum to Solandi that further delay in sacking the Parkash Singh Badal government would have grave consequences.
“It is a complete breakdown of the constitutional machinery. Punjab’s past related to militancy makes it vulnerable to exploitation by anti-social and anti-national elements. The state cannot be left rudderless at this juncture when people have lost faith in the government and its writ runs nowhere. The government seems to have abdicated its responsibility. The Centre should not wait for more untoward incidents,” the party stated.
Accusing the Badal government of pushing the state into anarchy, the party said timely action against culprits responsible for desecrating the Sikh holy book at Bagrari village near Faridkot would have prevented a flare-up. “It was insensitive to fire upon peaceful protesters without warning and kill two of them. The government created the situation to divert public’s attention from farmers’ agitation,” the memorandum said.
