CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying that one, who could not control rapes in the national capital, was trying to stoke communal passions in Punjab by visiting Amritsar and Faridkot. In a statement here, senior SAD leaders including Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said that Kejriwal’s visit to Punjab reflected a new low in politics in the country. “We fail to understand why a chief minister who has expressed his helplessness in controlling rapes in Delhi and whose five ministers have been embroiled in criminal cases should try to disturb the peace in Punjab and create fresh trouble for a duly elected government,” he said.
The SAD said that the entire sequence of events including interviews released to the social media before embarking on the visit and starting a hash tag today ‘AAPwithPunjab’ indicated Kejriwal’s visit to the State was purely political in nature. It said Kejriwal’s actions were also that of a chameleon. “In Amritsar he claimed that he had come to express grief but immediately afterwards in Faridkot he incited people against the government,” they said.
Urging the AAP and Kejriwal not to play with fire, the SAD leaders asked him why he had never visited Kashmir where anti national forces were always engineering incidents like the ones of sacrilege which happened in Punjab. They said similarly Kejriwal never visited Dalits killed in Haryana or the families of girls killed in Uttar Pradesh. The leaders said all this was because Kejriwal wanted to take political mileage out of the unfortunate incidents in view of the 2017 assembly elections.
Urging the people not to fall prey to such cheap tactics, both Grewal and Dr Cheema reminded Punjabis that Kejriwal had only given lip sympathy to their causes. They said Kejriwal had not formed a SIT to look into the genocide of Sikhs in Delhi in 1984. “You know he has never cared to appoint a Sikh as a minister in his cabinet. You also know how much respect he has for farmers,” the leaders.
Capt Amarinder Singh refused to divulge any details of his meeting with the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi held in New Delhi on Friday, saying that it was purely a party matter which he could not share with anyone. To another question, he said the meeting ended on a very positive note. He expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. He pointed out not only was the unrest because of the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, even the farmers were restive as their demands had not been met. He said that paddy was lying in the mandis and farmers were being fleeced by corrupt officials. Earlier, speaking at the programme Capt lauded the contribution of spiritual leaders and institutions like Dera Sachkhand and Bhallan.
Patiala: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh here on Saturday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for trying to play politics over the sensitive situation in Punjab. He said the Delhi CM had come here after ten days of incident just to score political points as he had hardly any genuine concern for Punjab. Talking to media persons on the sidelines of a programme organised by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha, the former Chief Minister promised to punish the real culprits behind the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib after the party forms the government in Punjab. Sharing the feeling of hurt and anger of the people over the desecration, he appealed for peace and harmony in the state at all costs.
