Badal, Sukhbir must resign after ‘conceding police failure’: Bajwa

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Sunday asked chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to quit on moral grounds, saying that by removing DGP Sumedh Saini, the Badals had conceded police failure in maintaining law and order in the state.
In a statement here, Bajwa said the outgoing DGP was the “personal choice” of Sukhbir, who is the home minister.
“Sukhbir must also resign as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal as the issues involved are multi-layered,” Bajwa said.
He asserted that at the first stage, it was intelligence failure coupled with that of the investigating agencies after the ‘bir’ of Guru Granth Sahib was reported missing and later its torn pages were found scattered.
He said the stand of the Congress had been vindicated that the entire sordid operation was engineered by the state agencies.
He described the killing of the two protesters in police firing at Behbal Kalan as cold-blooded murder, adding that the arrest of two baptized Sikhs from Panjgrain village was a “police frame-up to cover up things”.
Bajwa trashed the chief minister for the “overall mess that involved the unprecedented denigration of highest Sikh institutions like the Akal Takht and SGPC”. Bajwa alleged that Badal vitiated the atmosphere in the state and had no right to continue in office.
