SIRHIND (FATEHGARH SAHIB): Local Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra on Friday sat on a dharna demanding the shifting of the ‘haddarodi’ (carcass disposal point) to a new site allocated by the municipal council (MC).

He alleged that the municipal council had directed the contractor to vacate the space on June 12 as he was running an illegal business in a residential space.

But the contractor, Nagra said, did not pay heed to the municipal council’s directions and continued to run his business on the same space.

Naib tehsildar Gurmeet Singh reached the site of dharna and asked for two weeks time to shift the business and deadline was set for one week after residents of the area opposed Gurmeet Singh’s proposal.

Municipal council president Tarlok Singh Bajwa said that an advertisement had been issued for the auction of the new site to be held on October 30 but the auction could not be held.

“The auction could not take place today due to some problems on our end. We will announce new date whenever it is finalised,” said Bajwa.

Nagra alleged that he had raised the issue in Vidhan Sabha a couple of years back when it came to notice that the case of shifting the hadda rodi site was already under trial in Punjab and Haryana High Court for which the municipal council Sirhind did not hire any lawyer.

“When I raised the issue in Vidhan Sabha, the municipal council hired a lawyer and new site was allocated as per high court’s orders,” he said.

But the contractor Sudagar Singh got a stay order from the additional session’s court as there were no basic amenities like water supply at the new site.

Meanwhile the municipal council advertised for bids for auctioning new site twice on September 30 and October 14 however no party including current contractor came for bidding.
