Abohar : Though a month has passed since the state government claimed that funds had been released to compensate farmers affected by whitefly attack on cotton, only Rs 8 crore has so far been distributed in the Abohar sub-division out of Rs 85 crore earmarked for the purpose.
This was stated by Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar today. He wrote to the Chief Minister and Vidhan Sabha Speaker to constitute a legislators’ committee to probe the “mess” in compensation.
He said farmers of only two villages of his constituency had so far got compensation.
Jakhar alleged that jathedar-official nexus was facilitating disbursement of compensation to those who had not grown cotton for the last few years but managed to be listed as sufferers. The Chief Minister had announced that Rs 640 crore would be distributed to the affected cotton growers on war-footing, but the exercise was yet to be expedited.
A committee of legislators should be constituted to probe the assessment and distribution of compensation, he demanded.
