Jalandhar : Former Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira along with Sikh activists today staged a protest outside the Kapurthala SSP’s office demanding release of youths arrested for attacking Akali leaders at the state gurdwara, Kapurthala, and removal of Section 307 against them.

Khaira said over a dozen youths were implicated under Section 307 (attempt to murder) for forcing Akali leaders Bibi Jagir Kaur, Sarabjit Makkar, Jarnail Wahad and Upinderjit Kaur to flee from the state gurdwara on October 23.

Khaira, who also met the arrested youths at the Kapurthala jail today, alleged that unable to digest the humiliation meted out to them, ‘panthic’ leaders pressurised the Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police to register a grossly erroneous case.

Khaira alleged that it was surprising that the Kapurthala police arrested these youths, while nobody sustained any injury and there wasn’t any medico legal report in the case.

Meeting Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Rajinder Singh today and demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all youths detained at the Kapurthala jail, the Congress leader said in case the police failed to render justice, he would take the agitation to the next level and urge people for a Doaba and Kapurthala bandh on November 2.

“I will try to widen the struggle and am contacting eminent state leaders of the Sikh Sangat, so that they may also join me at Kapurthala to support our next bandh call against the youths’ arrest,” he said.

He also demanded removal of Section 295 from the FIR against the youths.

SSP Kapurthala Rajinder Singh said, “A Special Investigation Team has been constituted to look into the case. All further action will be taken based on the report of the SIT.”
