FEROZEPUR: Activists of the Congress held a protest on Sunday against the rising prices of essential commodities at Abohar, a sub-division of Fazilka district.
Congressmen, led by Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar (centre), protest against rising prices at Abohar on Sunday.
Leading the protest, Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar, announced that the electorate of Bihar refused to be swayed by the political gimmicks that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party men had played with them during the poll campaign.
“The resounding victory of the Grand Alliance indicated that the false promises were no more acceptable. People had realised that “Achhe din” architects had simply tried to fool the electorate,” said Jakhar.
“For the past 20 months, subsidised dal had not been distributed through fair price shops, no Diwali quota earmarked for sugar, mustard oil prices have gone up, kerosene oil was being reportedly disposed of in black market, widow and old-aged pension distribution system had collapsed, even vegetables as well as sweets were becoming unaffordable. In such a state of affairs, how poor people can celebrate festivals,” he said.
He said retail prices of pulses have increased three-four times after the NDA government came to power even though there had been substantial rise in production. The Punjab government has not taken any action so far and not raided godowns of hoarders so far, it shows its indifference towards the interest of common man, he said.
He said that people had reasons to believe that the ruling party politicians in Punjab had “mastered” sacrilege incidents to divert their attention from main issues. It was an unfortunate game which vitiated the peaceful environment of the state, he said.
