CHANDIGARH: Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma on Tuesday said making convicted people heads of Sikh institutions like the Akal Takht is not acceptable.

He was referring to the 'appointment' of Jagtar Singh Hawara convicted of assassinating former chief minister Beant Singh as jathedar of the Akal Takht.

Sharma also took a strong note of Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki, former MLA Inderjit Singh Zira and several others attending the radical Sarbat Khalsa in Amritsar.

In a statement, Sharma condemned the Congress in strong terms saying Sikki addressing the gathering had again exposed the Congress and its divisive politics. “It is known that in 1980s the Congress played a despicable role vis-a-vis Punjab, which resulted in unrest and turmoil in the state for more than two decades. Just to grab power, the Congress has been playing dirty politics... [N]ow again, the actions of the Congress showed that it is bent on vitiating the peaceful atmosphere of the state,” Sharma said.

Taking a dig at Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Sharma wondered as to how could a Congress legislator attend the radical gathering without the nod from the party leadership. “Without delay, Sonia and Rahul must clarify the party's official stand on this highly sensitive matter,” the BJP chief demanded.
