Ludhiana : The family of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh on Tuesday strongly opposed the appointment of Jagtar Singh Hawara as the new priest of Akal Takht Sahib by various Sikh organisations gathered at Chabba village near Amritsar under the banner of “Sarbat Khalsa.” The grandson of Beant Singh and Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu, while opposing the move of Sikh organisations to appoint Jagtar Singh Hawara as Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, said that his family is in deep pain after the announcement and strongly oppose the move.

Talking to Daily Post, Bittu wondered that how a person with criminal background can represent the Sikh community and feared that the move will divide the Sikh community. Reacting strongly, Bittu said that the only achievement and contribution of Hawara is his criminal background and the people of Punjab will not accept him as the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib. “Akal Takht is the supreme body of Sikhs and how a terrorist can be the head of that body,” he questioned. Bittu said that Punjab was passing through a deep political crisis and the law and order situation was worsening day by day. “The appointment of Hawara as Jathedar will disturb the peace of Punjab,” he added.
