NABHA: Dr Dharamvira Gandhi, the Lok Sabha member from Patiala, has expressed disappointment over the use of Member of Parliament Local Area Development funds allotted by him for repairing the historical Nehru jail in Nabha.
Local MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi inspecting the renovation work at the Nehru jail in Nabha on Saturday.
The MP had allotted `1.92 lakh from his discretionary fund for repairing the jail, where Jawaharlal Nehru was kept for a day after being arrested by the British during the ‘Jaiton Morcha’, besides carrying out developmental work at Nehru Park. After inspecting the ongoing renovation work at the jail, Dr Gandhi expressed his disappointment and said he would ask the deputy commissioner office to inquire into the matter.
Dr Gandhi visited the jail after attending the Children’s Day celebrations at the adjoining Maharaja Hira Singh Park on Saturday. Students from Government Girls School, Nabha, welcomed the chief guest and presented a dance besides chanting hymns.
The MP advised the children to leave behind caste, religion, and gender to abolish social evils.
TO STAGE DHARNA IF FIRE BRIGADE NOT INSTALLED IN A MONTH
Talking to HT, Gandhi also rebuked the local administration and political leadership for their failure to provide a fire brigade to Nabha. Accusing the administration of ignoring the town, the MP said he had allotted `22 lakh for the project a year ago, but nothing had been done due to the “lackadaisical approach” of the authorities.
Gandhi warned to stage a dharna in front of the administrative complex in Nabha if the fire brigade is not installed here within a month. He said he planned to prevent siphoning off of funds allocated under the MPLAD schem by forming committees of residents to watch the use of funds and report any discrepancies.
